The shadow study is focused on link between Rhino Grasshopper and Ecotect thought the Geco plugin. The test begin with calculating the shadow of static object with fixed hour, which is useful when testing the sun exposure at specific time during the day. The second test offers analysis throughout the day and is often used when evaluation site conditions, however here is used single object. The most recent test shows responsive shading linked to the sun position.

Evaluation points are spread around a hemisphere and are used to ‘bloom’ in order to block the direct sunlight, thus providing responsive shading.

There are many designs of responsive shading devices and façades, one of which is Al Bahr Towers by AHR. I have been studying is mechanism to understand how it works. By knowing exact time and orientation of a site the sun position can be easily found, which is what I did previously for the project. However the responsive shading is the most informed one. Even though sun position is predictable, the weather changes are not. There is a big difference between sunny and overcast days, thus I looked at how a potential responsive shading should react at live light sensor data. Using Arduino Uno, basic code and Firefly plugin for Grasshopper I was able to create a digital prototype of shading device (only single module was tested). For this part I used Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) or usually known as photo resistor.
Later I am planning to use lux sensor to find the exact lux levels, which will help the shading device to adapt better to the outside environment in order meet the recommended lux levels for different indoor spaces.
